‘SCIENCE’
Spectacular Sound and Light Show

Our SCIENCE Spectacular Sound and Light Show was created by award winning artistic duo ‘Luxmuralis’ – made up of sculptor Peter Walker and composer David Harper.

As a Cathedral we were able to engage with members of the public through the show itself and with students through resources we created in response to this stunning artwork.

The show involved sound and light art being projected onto the architectural features within Worcester Cathedral and visitors to it were enveloped with bespoke music as they made their way through the breath-taking installation. It was designed to explore and contemplate the contributions of science and human understanding of the physical world around us.

"The SCIENCE Spectacular Sound and Light Show ran from Wednesday 21st to Saturday 24th September 2022, for the four nights, and was a great success. Unfortunately, we had to cancel our first night on Tuesday 20th as we couldn’t set up for the show on Monday 19th out of respect for Her Majesty The Queen (on the day of her funeral).

Our PR & Digital Communications Manager had promoted the event well through press releases, our social media channels and through our in-house e-newsletter which has a reach of over 3,350 recipients and an over 40% open rate. Having hosted a similar event in 2021 which was very successful, there was much enthusiasm for this event and the bookings came quickly; for the 4 nights we sold 3532 tickets on Eventbrite and 135 on the door.

On the advice of Artistic Director Peter Walker we allotted 200 tickets per 15 minutes time slot to enter the show which was logistically quite complex. It did mean that people had to queue on arrival and as they toured the show around the Cathedral. In the future we would consider having an early showing at a future event for people who are less able to stand for long periods of time.

There was a huge amount of planning and organisation that went into the event. Peter Walker, who had an excellent team of technical staff that installed and later de-rigged the event. One member of his technical team stayed in Worcester to oversee the show each night too. The Cathedral Welcome Team, Vergers and volunteers worked hard each evening to give a great welcome and experience to those attending, and comments left in our Visitor Book shows what a great job everyone did,

Absolutely amazing being immersed in the music and light! Loved it!

This was absolutely stunning! Thank you so much for the experience.

Wow! I’ve never seen anything like this before. Thank you to all who have been involved . Wonderful.

Fulfilling my childhood dream of climbing into a kaleidoscope. Thank you.

Fantastic experience. Great to see women in science celebrated.

Not sure what to expect – we were blown away – absolutely brilliant! Mesmerizing and engaging!

It was a mesmerising performance in a beautiful setting – it really brought out the architecture of the Cathedral too. Thanks!

Beautiful show enjoyed by all the family including our 2 year old son. A visual treat! "

"The Learning Team was excited to be able to work with the SCIENCE Spectacular Sound and Light Show, collaborating with colleagues across the Cathedral and externally.

We created a set of resources called “Science and Faith” to accompany the show which included a short film featuring the Bishop of Worcester, Right Revd Dr John Inge, lesson plans for both KS2 and KS3 classes, as well as discussion questions for assemblies or discussion classes (such as form class or P4C lesson). In the film Bishop John shared his thoughts on the congruence of Science and Faith.

30 schools and the Bible Society  signed up to receive these resources which was wonderful. Based on their response, and what we know of the schools, we estimate that the resources will have been used with over 2000 students. We continue to advertise these resources and will make them available for schools for some time to come as they are proving really popular. So far our anecdotal feedback has been positive, and we know that some schools have signed up having been referred by others who have received the resources."
