Art and Soul

An interactive art experience created by Catherine Pinnock

Art and Soul is an exhibition that you create for yourself.

Using the three questions provided you are invited to choose paintings which most represent your answers, and using the easel, present your own exhibition.

This exhibition is designed to meet you where you are at any given time, there is no right or wrong answers or any magical formula. It’s offered to give participants time to stop and ponder, and to use in any way you feel is helpful.

In creating the paintings Catherine studiously avoids realism, basing the colours on the liturgical colours of the church year. Participants have the opportunity to read about these or to choose their paintings without this information or try both!

There are 12 paintings to choose from to answer the questions: How do I feel today? How do I react to life? What it’s the colour of my Soul?

“[I was going through a difficult time of bereavement] so it was helpful to see the colours gently swaying together in harmony, in acceptance of taking the “rough with the smooth” all at once, but also seeing that sometimes there are sharp edges and that hurt, and it hurts more when you stop allowing the joy into the pain.

On [the day I took part] the paintings did help me see how I was feeling, and how I was reacting. Did I discover the colour of my Soul? I think my soul is multicoloured, life is mixed with all sorts of external happenings, and my soul can find that hard, very hard sometimes, but I learnt that in pain and suffering I can usually find the joy if I give myself time to look for it.”

This exhibition lends itself well to small group sessions and art workshops. Please ask if you would like to know more about these opportunities. Westhill provides all instructions and guidance for participants as well as a ‘Conversation and Reflection’ booklet.

About the Artist:

Catherine Pinnock MA, in her own words.
I graduated from what is now Birmingham City University in 1986 with a BA (Hons) in Three-Dimensional Design (Ceramics with Glass) and completed my MA in Surface Design there in 2006.
I am a free-lance artist and have designed many stained-glass windows for the last few decades, which are located around Birmingham where I live, and across the country in churches, chapels, schools and hospitals.
I think of myself as a ‘creative’ rather than having a specific focus as my interests take me into stone carving, contemporary gilding, mosaic, painting, portraits, weaving, photography, music, dance and any way that I can express myself creatively.

I enjoy encouraging others to find their own creative place and have led many workshops and day courses over my time as a free-lance artist.

ART AND SOUL was created as an installation for Birmingham Cathedral in 2010 and has been on a journey ever since.  I am delighted that it is continuing that journey with Westhill Endowment.
