St Peter's Brighton
Who's my Rock
St Peter’s is a dynamic church in central Brighton. Our iconic Grade II* Listed building is a significant and much-loved local landmark in the city, used for a variety of community activities. The 8th May 2024 marked the start of our 200th anniversary! Whilst much has changed around it, our building remains an iconic and consistent presence within the community. Across the year we are running a range of activities that reflect Brighton's unique heritage and artistic culture, and offer the community exciting opportunities to engage creatively with our building and learn more about our incredible city.
‘Who’s my Rock?’
Community Art Workshops & Installation
Using the theme of ‘foundation stone’ or ‘rock’, this project will visually reflect the church’s presence in the centre of a very colourful and vibrant seaside city through the creation of a giant ‘wave’(reflecting our seaside location), made from thousands of pieces of ‘Brighton Rock’ (artistic replications of the colourful sticks of rock candy – see image to right).
The project will also give the opportunity to reflect on the resilience and hope seen across the city over recent years, particularly through the pandemic and cost-of-living crisis. The bringing together of multiple pieces of individual art into one installation reflects the coming together of the community during hard times. Participants will be asked to reflect and celebrate the people in their lives who supported them during harder times, serving as their ‘rock’.
This project is made up of three elements:
Art Workshops
This autumn, workshops will run in schools, community centres and churches across Brighton. During these, participants will transform cardboard tubes into colourful sticks of ‘Brighton Rock’, reflecting on their personal ‘rocks’, learning more about the church’s foundation stone and our city’s heritage as reflected in St Peter’s 200-year history.
Art Installation
The 2000 colourful ‘Brighton rock’ tubes will come together into one installation piece in St Peter’s Church, hanging at different heights from the vaulted ceiling (below left) to create a giant ‘wave’.
Viewing Events
The completed installation will be viewed in St Peter’s Church during 2025 Easter school holidays and the following May weekends as part of Brighton’s popular Fringe Festival. Drop-in art activities will run in the church as part of these events. Local art class providers will be invited to these to encourage connections for ongoing engagement with the arts.
