Big Kids
Boro Cereal
Boro Cereal is an exciting initiative, designed to equip and empower Primary School aged children to engage with and improve their local culture, making a big difference in Middlesbrough.
Working with schools and churches, BiG KIDS will deliver a series of creative lessons, focussing on servant leadership, entrepreneurial and presentation skills, giving children opportunities to innovate social action community projects; inspiring them to change the negative cycles they often find themselves in. We believe that God has placed each of us in our localities and situations for a purpose – we hope to allow the children to find theirs.
We know how passionate local people are to change their community environment and particularly the negative perception that many have of Middlesbrough. A huge part of that, involves raising the aspirations and hopes of children and young people, enabling them to feel pride in their localities.
“Cereal” is an idea that began after being involved in the organisational team of Boro Soup, a live fundraising network event that empowers local grassroots projects, allowing them to showcase their ideas and schemes, raising publicity and funds in the process.
The “Soup” concept has spread across the world – so we felt that it was about time a children’s version was created; where families, public and business are invited (and served a free bowl of Cereal!).
The children would then present their respective initiatives, with the audience intended to vote with their spoons to determine how the funds are proportionally divided between the presentations.
Through this, each of the children will have the opportunity to showcase their project to a large audience of influential and supportive people, creating opportunities for sustainability beyond our work.
We then intend to continue working with the children, to see their ideas come to fruition, and signpost them to other groups working in similar networks.
Throughout our five years as a charity, we have felt support by many like-minded people and activists, who seek to make a difference, many of whom have been empowered by Boro Soup.
There have been many success stories in a monetary sense; however, the true benefit of the event comes in the shape of its network – with many presenters commenting on the family atmosphere.
We would love this to be replicated in schools and our “Cereal” event, and are certain that through our links, the children we meet can feel supported and empowered to make change happen.
