Proton Foundation
The Flourish Mental Health Project
Flourish is an 8-week program designed to support disadvantaged and vulnerable children (ages 8-16). The program teaches them how self-beliefs are formed and how they influence behavior, the impact of social media on mental well-being, and strategies to nurture self-esteem and foster aspirations. By focusing on mental and emotional well-being, the Flourish Project aims to help children overcome challenges and reach their full potential in areas such as life, relationships, and education. Our sessions cover topics such as identity, beliefs, mindset, social media, self-esteem, dreams and aspirations, goal setting, and personal evaluation.
In October 2016, ‘The Flourish Project’ was launched under the Proton Foundation, founded by the current CEO. Since its inception, the project's impact has grown nationally. Hannah joined the Proton Foundation in 2014 as the Executive Assistant to the former CEO, and in 2021, she took on the role of CEO. Deeply passionate about helping young people thrive and reach their full potential, Hannah is dedicated to making a tangible difference in their lives. Her vision is simple yet powerful: "Imagine if we could equip young people to become everything they are capable of—what could they achieve?"
The Flourish Project was created to help young people develop a growth mindset, cultivate positive thinking patterns, and begin to understand their potential. It empowers them to recognise their future aspirations and set meaningful goals. Statistics show that 1 in 6 children and young people aged 5-16 will experience a probable mental health disorder. This highlights the growing mental and emotional health struggles faced by today’s youth, leading to issues such as anxiety, depression, self-harm, and suicide.
Research further indicates that in a typical classroom of 30 students, 6 children aged 7-15 are likely to experience a mental health disorder. Moreover, 1 in 14 young people will have attempted suicide by the age of 17. The Flourish Project aims to bring preventative and transformational solutions to schools and communities, addressing these urgent challenges and fostering positive change.
We aim to build strong partnerships with churches, faith-based organisations, and schools, training and equipping staff and volunteers to become Flourish facilitators. Our goal is to support local organisations and churches in reaching out to their communities by offering preventative solutions to the growing mental health crisis among children and young people.
Currently, the project is being run in several communities, including a mix of Christian churches and organisations (such as Llandaff Diocese, Restore Collective, Bethel Baptist Church, and Kings Community Church), as well as Muslim, Catholic, non-faith, neurodiverse, and mental health groups. We have witnessed many positive, life-changing impacts on children, including those who no longer want to commit suicide and those who have gained confidence and improved self-esteem, leading to better overall mental well-being.
Since the project’s inception, over 5,000 young people have participated, and we have consistently tracked their progress. Data from 2,903 participants shows an average improvement of 17.31% in mental well-being.
