Out of the Depths
Being Me: Building emotional resiliance through Art
"Out of the Depths" is a three-phase art project which aims to empower young people to explore Mental Health and Wellbeing through the lens of faith using creativity. Phase one in moving beyond words will be a high quality, innovative residential program with resident artist, Janaya McCallum. Phase two will be a touring art exhibition in schools and parishes and phase three will be to digitised the artwork, creative fresh resources that will enable young people to deep dive into their own understanding and experiences of Mental Health.
Background
Post-Covid, there is an increasing need to focus on the mental health of young people, providing them with the tools to express and explore their emotions constructively. The "Out of the Depths" project, run by the Kenelm Youth Trust, forms part of our wider Catholic mental health project, Quo Vadis. This initiative helps young people look to the future with confidence and hope.
The residential element of the project will be aking place at Soli Centre for Youth Ministry. The retreats offer a unique opportunity to step away from everyday life, immerse in spiritual reflection through Adoration and Holy Mass, and connect with others while exploring the beauty of the Churnet Valley.
These retreats are the catalyst for phase two and three of the project; the artwork created, with the permission of participants, will go on to be used in an art exhibition in schools and parishes and then it will be digitised, forming a brand new resource which will have wide ranging reach.
Overview
The residential retreat, running from 10th-12th February for Years 10-13 and 14th-15th February for young adults, invites participants to explore mental health through faith and creative expression. Resident artist Janaya will guide them in artistic activities that inspire personal reflection and self-expression.
During the retreat, participants will engage in creative activities designed to help them reflect on their mental health in a faith-based context. They will also have opportunities for spiritual growth through their participation in prayer, small group times and access to the sacraments.
The artwork produced will be featured in an art exhibition that will tour schools and parishes across the diocese, engaging other young people with these important themes of mental health and faith.
It will then go on to be digitised and our hope is that this resource will foster wider conversations on mental health, allowing young people to share their experiences and explore how creativity and faith can support their wellbeing.
