Prayer Spaces in Schools
Since 2007, Prayer Spaces in Schools has been creating safe, creative spaces for children and young people to reflect and pray. We are working with RE Today to produce lesson plans and other resources for teachers and volunteers to deliver wraparound teaching supporting the prayer space experience. We’re also providing an updated multi-language ‘How to Get Started’ video course for volunteers, and updating our website to improve engagement and keep resources available!
With more than a million young people impacted so far, ‘Prayer Spaces in Schools’ works with teachers to provide creative spaces for children and young people to reflect and pray. In a generation marked by the trauma of the Covid-19 pandemic and mental health struggles, we believe that these spaces are needed more than ever. Pupils are invited to engage with a range of activities with themes everyone can relate to – from forgiveness and hope to gratitude, injustice, identity, anxiety, loss and conflict.
Previously prayer spaces have been one off or short term events in schools, but RE teachers have said for several years that they would like to support their pupils’ experiences in the prayer spaces with lessons about prayer. We’re therefore working with RE Today to produce high quality lesson plans and resources, training for teachers and assembly content to seamlessly integrate the prayer spaces experience with the RE curriculum. These plans are part of our wider training improvements, including updated training resources for volunteers, a multi-lingual ‘How to Get Started’ video resource and website improvements.
