Lichfield Cathedral
The History Plays
Lichfield Cathedral is undertaking a year-long project to restore its central spire and increase engagement with its built heritage. To do this, we are creating a community theatre project bringing to life the stories of the people connected with the founding of the Cathedral, including St Chad and Bishop Headda, and countless of pilgrims who have visited the Cathedral from AD700 to the present day.
This project aims to involve the people in the local community in creating a dramatic performance which will bring to life the people involved in the original founding of the Cathedral, pilgrims, the people who have worked on the Cathedral and have been involved in its restoration, and finally visitors today.
Participants will have a greater understanding about Christian pilgrimage and the Cathedral’s role as a place of pilgrimage from the 8th century when it stood as the second most-visited pilgrimage destination in England, to the present day when pilgrims are still welcomed, and Chad’s original resting place is marked by a newly reinstated shrine altar. The Lichfield History Plays will premiere in the Cathedral in May 2024.
