The Leicester Schools Peace Project is supporting the flourishing of our superdiverse city by creating a scheme of work for Peace Education from Key Stage 1 to Key Stage 4. This project is in partnership with Leicester SACRE and will be part of the New Agreed Syllabus for Leicester.
The project began by discovering the founding story of the University of Leicester in 1921. The university is the first war memorial after World War I for a grieving city and county. The university was founded as a ‘living memorial’, a ‘palace of peace’ with a Latin motto ‘That they might have life.’
Overall goal: Produce a Peace Education Scheme of Work and Lesson Plans for Leicester Schools in line with the new Leicester Agreed Syllabus and with progression from Key Stage 1-4.
Resources used will include teachings on justice and peace of different world views represented in Leicester, local stories and history, peacemaking skills training, peace mobile, and contemporary events. Children’s own stories can also be sensitively used.

The aims of the scheme of work are based on this model:
Lesson Plans and Assemblies already developed
Materials based on the founding stories of the University of Leicester a hundred years ago are already available for use. They connect well in the lead up to Remembrance Sunday but can be used any time of the year. See https://www.ppu.org.uk/lspp
Working in cooperation with the University of Leicester, Peace Tours led by student ambassadors are available for schools. Pupils have a guided tour of the first buildings of the university, hear its peace stories, visit the home where David and Richard Attenborough grew up, walk to the Arch of Remembrance war memorial and then down Peace Walk. So far 600 + pupils have participated. For schools to enroll for a Peace Tour please email by clicking here
