We have made a modular film of what happens in a Synagogue so that schools which are unable to make in person visits will be able to access a professionally made resource which shows and explains the Key Stage 2 and Key Stage 3 elements of the Judaism curriculum.
This resource could also be used prior to, (or following) a Synagogue visit to prepare or reinforce the children’s learning.
There are nine modules in the Synagogue series namely:-
The Torah
Daily and Sabbath Prayer
Kashrut (The Dietary Laws)
Bar Mitzvah
Books used in the Synagogue
Kippah and Tallit
What Goes on in a Synagogue?
What Does a Synagogue Look Like?
The Branches of British Jewry
Relevant areas of the modules are illustrated by film of the interior of the Synagogues.
Schools can also access the film via Pennine Learning. SACRE, the body responsible for setting the Religious Education syllabus for schools within Leeds, Kirklees and Calderdale and Bradford areas of West Yorkshire helped with checking that the relevant aspects of the Judaism Curriculum were covered.
This film will explain aspects of Judaism relevant to KS2 and KS3 regarding forms of worship and practice during a Synagogue service. The layout of the Synagogue and its importance will be explained. Pupils will have a chance to look at the various artefacts used within an Orthodox Synagogue and their use will be explained. If desired, to enable pupils to have their queries answered a follow up Zoom session or Synagogue visit can be requested.
The aim of this film is to help dispel ignorance, misconceptions and prejudices about the Jewish religion and practice.
