Chelmsley Wood Baptist Church

Season of the Spoken Word

At Chelmsley Wood Baptist Church, we ran a ‘Spoken Word’ season in 2018 which included events, workshops and shared activities with other local organisations (churches, schools, local groups, charities) and finished at the community festival day in July, which we helped organise.

The workshops included story creation and storytelling, calligraphy, poetry and film making. We held a number of events with traditional storytelling and a complete retelling of the Gospel of Mark. Alongside these we organised some family events, bringing together a diverse range of people from our community, as well as being part of the big community festival, Chelmund’s Day in July.

Why did we choose to do this?

Our community faces a number of challenges, but one of the key things we sought to do was to further build community. Resources are scarce here for the very human needs of spirituality, relationship building and empowering local people, we see building community as essential if our community is to thrive. We think it is important to develop people’s relationships with each other, grow their aspirations and hope, and give them new skills and experiences. This is a basic requirement before people can begin to address some of their specific difficulties, physic, mental and spiritual.

What happened?

Through working together people and local organisations strengthened our relationships. We improved perceptions of the area, both inside and out as people were surprised (and delighted!) by the activities that were happening. We also fired up people’s aspirations and on the back of this another local organisation plans to run a music themed season in the new year.
