British Youth for Christ

British Youth for Christ was established in 1946 to meet the practical and spiritual needs of young people in the UK.

We believe young people matter and we are committed to seeing the potential of young people’ realised and released, their lives transformed and given the best foundation for success.

Over the past seven decades, British Youth for Christ has sought to meet these social, physical, economic and spiritual needs through a variety of programmes that are tailored to impact and transform young people’s lives and culture.
Lockdown 2020
2020 hasn’t turned out to be quite the year we had planned for with so many shifts in culture, unexpected and unprecedented, global landscape shifting crises.  As things changed so many of our hoped-for conferences, events, activities, festivals and fundraisers were either cancelled, postponed and some were moved online. Covid-19 has impacted on every aspect of our work, but it did not stop our work.  While how we reach young people changed, in part due to the lockdown and the constant development in government restrictions, our mission has remained the same.
Our Lockdown Response
One of our projects is the existing RE:QUEST website which provides teachers across the UK and beyond with excellent quality resources for teaching about Christianity in an Religious Education lesson context. The site is divided into four sections:

Primary School

Lower Secondary School
(Years 7-9)

Upper Secondary School
(GCSE and A Level)

RE:SOLVE is the section of the website which has been funded by Westhill Endowment.
During lockdown, as young people were still required to study RE from home, we pivoted instantly to producing resources to support families virtually. We worked hard to support the governments' RE curriculum through our this website, providing a series of Home Learning Projects themed around key Christian concepts. Over the previous year, we estimate that over 1 million students accessed the site.
Lockdown allowed us to show our adaptability and flexibility in responding to the needs of families, young people and the wider community.

Equipping Schools
We believe that RE:QUEST has a vital role to play in the delivery of good quality teaching about the Christian faith, which is why we are passionate about building up our resource to provide teachers with materials which truly reflect Christian beliefs and practices.  We want an opportunity to make a difference and believe wholeheartedly that we can do this with RE:QUEST. Over the coming months, we intend to completely overhaul the site, to ensure it is the best possible source of Religious Studies resources on Christianity in the country. Our vision is to have every teacher in the country accessing it, delivering lessons which are a true reflection of what it means to be a practising Christian in today’s world.

Our new site includes new GCSE and A Level resources within the newly developed RE:SOLVE section:

There are five new apologetics focused modules. These include:
Does science offer evidence for God’s existence?

Was Jesus just a man, God or both?

Can we believe in God when there is so much evil and suffering in the world?

Can we be sure the Bible is the Word of God?
Links have been made with a number of teaching institutions starting in November, 2020. We delivered a series of training workshops to PGCE RE teachers around teaching Christianity and how to use RE:QUEST. We are continuing to build our links and networks within the RE teaching sphere.
