Barnet SACRE

‘VAT in RE’ Curriculum Project 2020

SACRE: Standing Advisory Committee for Religious Education
VAT: Vocabulary, Artefacts and Texts

‘VAT in RE’ is a project that intends to boost the skills and confidence of RE Coordinators and Teachers to develop and implement a Medium-Term Curriculum Plan that will impact on the quality of RE delivery in their classroom.

The project will provide a series of training events, workshops and writing group sessions that will introduce RE participants to the idea of ‘VAT’ in Religious Education: Vocabulary (Etymology), Artefacts and Texts (stories). The workshops will include a close working relationship with members of the richly diverse local faith groups represented on the SACRE in Barnet.

Let us introduce Barnet SACRE. We are a very active and diverse SACRE, well supported by the Borough of Barnet and the respected Chair Kevin McSharry.

For 2020, the population of Barnet is estimated to be 402,700, which is the largest of all the London boroughs. The Barnet population is very diverse, with the proportion of Black, Asian and Minority Ethnic (BAME) people in the borough population recorded as 40.3% in 2020.

Based on data from the Annual Population Survey, the most common religion in Barnet is Christianity (39.2%), followed by the Jewish (19.2%) Muslim  (11.8%) Hindu (4.0%); and Buddhist (1.9%) faiths. Almost one in five people in the borough has no religion (19.4%).

This makes for an exciting SACRE.
